It is easier to be 人

Lorilee Yang

2 December 2018 - January 2019

It is the nature of the diaspora that there are often gaps, lapses of knowledge and cultural misunderstandings across generations, particularly when assimilation is imposed. In the attempt to access her family heritage, “It is easier to be 人” finds Yang collaging together references to Chinese myth, symbolism and tradition. This exhibition will investigate the perceptions and various forms that influence and form one’s cultural identity; seeking to define what is reconciled, displaced and created anew through hybridity, context and translation.

Lorilee Yang is an artist based in Naarm (Melbourne). She completed a BFA (with Honours) from the VCA, Melbourne in 2014. Primarily working in the medium of painting, she seeks to destabilise and subvert the historic Eurocentric paradigms of modernist painting and attempts to challenge and claim agency over an identity that is historically constrained due to gender and exoticisation. She has exhibited at SEVENTH Gallery, Bus Projects, TCB art inc., Fort Delta and Lon Gallery.
